Eduardo Brondizio

Eduardo S. Brondizio is a Distinguished Professor of Anthropology at Indiana University Bloomington, and directs the Center for the Analysis of Social-Ecological Landscapes (CASEL). Committed for three decades to field-based research in the Brazilian Amazon, Brondizio’s work has examined:

  • Household decision-making, mobility, and landscape change
  • Small-scale farmers’ livelihood and interaction with global markets and development programs
  • Climate change impacts in urban and rural areas
  • The governance of the region’s increasingly complex mosaic of urban, agricultural, indigenous, and conservation areas

His current collaborative project, Agents, examines local and often invisible sustainability initiatives in the region. Brondizio has contributed to several regional and global level environmental assessments, and serves on numerous international scientific and editorial boards. He is the co-chair of the Global Assessment of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).
