Becoming W.I.S.E.: UW–Madison’s Global Health Institute Prepares for the Next Pandemic

Is Wisconsin prepared for the next pandemic?

With numerous schools and colleges, including world-known expertise in emerging infectious diseases, UW–Madison is uniquely positioned to assist Wisconsin with epidemic and pandemic preparedness and response. The Global Health Institute, as part of their 2.0 proactive vision under the direction of Director Dr. Jorge Osorio, is in the process of creating the Wisconsin Initiative on Surveillance and Epidemics (W.I.S.E.). The work will include:

  • Establishing One Health Centers located in hotspots around the world to detect and study pathogens with pandemic potential before they become a major threat to human and animal health (centers are currently underway in Colombia, India, and Sierra Leone)
  • Translational research efforts with a focus on key drivers of outbreaks
  • Partnerships with academia, government, industry, and local communities to allow for active preparedness, early detection, rapid response, and recovery
